Case study
Thamesmead, Pumping station 8
Client: Tilfen Land
Gallions Urban Village at Thamesmead needed to reinforce the foul sewage system to accommodate increased flows. The pumping station comprises a reinforced concrete building incorporating a 10m deep pumping station with 400m of incoming sewer and 800m of rising main. Compressed air techniques stabilised shaft sinking and micro tunnelling under high artesian pressure. The ground was contaminated and the risk of unexploded devices from the World War II added to construction challenges.
Added value
The project was split into works above ground, and specialist tunnelling in difficult conditions. Early contractor involvement ensured appropriate experience was available to the employer. A comprehensive site investigation was specified and agreed with the contractor who subsequently took increased construction risk. Value engineering and risk workshops monitored and controlled progress
