Case study
Trains Light Maintenance Depot, Wembley
Client: John Mowlem PLC
Chiltern Railways required a new two road light maintenance depot within a truncated cutting adjacent to Wembley Stadium Station. The facility included a depot building with associated management offices and welfare facilities. It also included a carriage wash, refuelling station, sidings for train stabling, a bypass road and a vehicular access bridge across the existing tracks.
Added value
We proposed an alternative form retaining wall which resulted in substantial capital saving. Our temporary works solution enabled the construction of a building without the need for contiguous piling. We designed an access bridge to the roof of the new depot which covered the main Chiltern Line. By value engineering, we re-configured the span arrangement to obviate the need for a central support and provided an end bearing sheet piled abutment to limit rail possessions to a single weekend.
