Case study

DLR Shadwell Ticket Hall

Client: Cleshar Contract Services
The DLR station needed improved circulation, better retail space and visual enhancement. This technically demanding temporary works project was designed to enable the removal of a masonry pier within a multi-span arched viaduct, so that a permanent replacement support could be installed. The works included the design of temporary steel supports and foundations allowing transfer of a 4000kN load during a night time possession. Pre- loading of the temporary works mitigated settlement in the permanent works.

Added value
To minimise the effect on the existing structure, circular hollow section needles were installed through 350mm diameter diamond cored holes, and grouted into place. Special propping was designed to support the end of the cantilevered lateral extension to the viaduct. This was supported from the existing structure to avoid closing an adjacent pedestrian thoroughfare. Residual deflections were reduced by jacking load into the temporary supports, and preloading the permanent works steel supports. Works were undertaken without disrupting rail traffic, and achieved within stringent tolerances for movements at rail level.
