Prince of Wales Bridge

Prince of Wales Bridge

Rail
THE BRIEF Access to maintain major structures is difficult! Robert West, along with our design partners David Price Consulting and Pennine Controls, have been appointed by Amey on behalf of National Highways to design the removal of the existing maintenance underdeck gantry, which is at the end of its life span, and design a new modern gantry at the Prince of Wales Bridge. This commission has unique challenges of removing the 35m steel structure from the suspended span of the Prince of Wales Bridge, in the marine environment. There is also the challenge of installing a carbon efficient, maintainable new gantry to access and maintain the Bridge. We have completed the optioneering phase for both the removal of the existing gantry and new gantry. The detailed design of a temporary support structure…

Lowestoft pontoons

Lowestoft pontoons

Renewables
THE BRIEF ABP required a new floating CTV facility at Lowestoft to service wind farms in the southern area of the North Sea. RWC were engaged by Marine Design Limited to undertake the sizing and topside design for their Dockmaster concrete/polystyrene modular pontoon system and a design for the pontoon to shore guidance/anchoring system. VALUE-ADDED SOLUTION RWC developed a restraint system comprising struts and braces fixed to shore-based anchor blocks to resist berthing and mooring forces and hinged in the horizontal plan to manage tidal variations and wave disturbances. The system limited the need for expensive guide piles in the dock. The pontoons were constructed in Marine Designs facility in Cornwall. FINAL OUTCOMES The berth was designed and completed in under 12 months providing a functional and economic facility for…

Ferrovial study on port capacity

Ferrovial study on port capacity

Renewables
THE BRIEF In 2022 a large European multi-national construction company contracted Robert West to carry out a UK and Ireland Ports Study for Potential Manufacturing Sites for Concrete Foundations for Floating Offshore Wind Projects. Our client defined the basic requirements they would need in a port to enable them to construct these 25,000T concrete foundations onshore for subsequent loading onto suitable offshore vessels/barges. Construction process and estimated timescales, platform characteristics and characteristics of type vessel. The study was carried out in three phases: Phase 1 - Initial desk top screening of potential ports and compilation of a long list of options Phase 2 – Detailed analysis of short list of 10 No. candidate ports Phase 3 – Extensive interaction with the two preferred ports VALUE-ADDED SOLUTION The key criteria for…

Sener Studies on Wind Farm facilities

Renewables
THE BRIEF Scottish Power Renewables (SPR) is developing the East Anglia Hub (EAH) set of wind farms in the North Sea, as part of the round 3 area where the wind farm East Anglia One (EA1) sits.In May 2021 Sener was asked by Scottish Power to carry out an assessment of the Port Services required for the EAH project. This study was carried out to provide input into EAH’s strategy for selecting, negotiating, and securing ports for Construction Monitoring and Management and for Operations and Maintenance.Sener awarded a sub-consultancy to Robert West to assist them with this assessment, providing local knowledge of the candidate ports.VALUE-ADDED SOLUTION In Stage 1, SPR functional requirements were defined to quantify both the number of visits Service Operational Vessels (SOV) needed to make each month and…

Meadow High School at Harefield Academy

Infrastructure
THE BRIEF Robert West was appointed to provide multi-disciplinary advice in relation to the expansion of Meadow High School at the Harefield Academy satellite site, Northwood Way, Harefield. Meadow High School currently provides education for Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) pupils aged 11–19 years at a site located on Royal Lane, Uxbridge in the London Borough of Hillingdon. The school was previously subject of a Department for Education (DfE) refurbishment project that Robert West consulted on and is now complete. Proposals have arisen to address the need for more SEND school places in the boroughVALUE-ADDED SOLUTION Robert West was responsible for producing a Transport Assessment, School Travel Plan, Delivery and Servicing Plan and a preliminary access design for the site to support a full planning application for the development…

New building for the Warwick School

New building for the Warwick School

Infrastructure
THE BRIEF A new school building for staff and students is to be built on the existing site providing up-to-date and extended facilities. The building programme included an expansion from six to seven form entry to provide more school places for children in the local area and planning permission was being sought by our client accordingly.Robert West were commissioned to undertake an assessment of the potential impact of the expansion on transport in the immediate surrounding area.VALUE-ADDED SOLUTION Robert West produced a Transport Assessment and Travel Plan with the strategy to mitigate the impacts identified. Through the planning stage, Robert West also assessed the safety at the existing site access. Our team undertook a Construction Logistics Plan for all phases of the construction during the building replacement work. They took into consideration the constraints…

Kingfisher Project – Immingham

Kingfisher Project – Immingham

Marine, Renewables
THE BRIEF RWC were engaged by Saipem to undertake marine and shoreside civil engineering services for a Pre-FEED study for a FSRU berth at Immingham, UK. The project comprised a new jetty head an associated dolphins connected to the shore by a 1.2km pipe track and trestle. Once ashore the gas was piped (overground and underground in directional drill) to the power station and refineries around 5km away. RWC were part of a multi-disciplinary team covering all aspects of the project.VALUE-ADDED SOLUTION The project would be completed under a DCO and an assessment of the likely environmental restrictions was made as a key assumption. RWC completed navigational assessments for bringing ships to the berth and agreed these with the Harbour Master. Delivering within a tight capital cost budget was a…

Acorn Project

Acorn Project

Marine, Renewables
THE BRIEF Project Acorn will receive and treat captured carbon dioxide recovered from industrial activity around the North Sea and pump it into depleted undersea gas fields. The CO2 will be delivered by ship using and existing jetty previously used for import of LNG for the now dis-used gas power station. RWC were engaged by Genesis to undertake an engineering assessment of an existing jetty head and dolphins and the approach trestle and pipe track. A condition survey and as made drawings were provided on which the assessment was based. VALUE-ADDED SOLUTION RWC undertook an assessment of the wave climate at the berth; undertook berthing and mooring analysis; and verified movements for the MLA interface to assess operational limits and outages for the berth. A detailed engineering assessment was made…
