Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) and foul drainage networks, and public open space were also incorporated into our design package. Robert West have responsibility for discharge of all reserved matters for the development and are responsible for obtaining technical approval for highway works as part of the Section 278 Agreement. All designs are required to be carried out in accordance with the outline planning consent for the development and associated Section 106 Agreement. VALUE-ADDED SOLUTION With the potential for a future linkage to a bypass road a two-stage highways design has been proposed by Robert West. The first…

Ther Swan school

Ther Swan school

Uncategorized
THE BRIEF Our challenge was to provide the new secondary school with an access design and associated management strategy to enable all road users to operate in safe and efficient way. The proposed location for the school had several constraints to overcome.  These included: vehicular access to the school that cut through a strategic cycle lane in Oxford, which accommodated very high cycle flows of circa 500 cyclists per hour, and traffic speed of 40 mph along the major road from where access was gained. Furthermore, the area around the school has on-street parking congestion and on-site drop off was required – resulting in vehicles needing to turn across the busy cycle lane. VALUE-ADDED SOLUTION Undertaking access design, road safety audit and complex modelling exercises our team were able to…

ARMY NAVY FLYOVER CHELMSFORD

Uncategorized
THE BRIEFThe Army & Navy Flyover is a multi-span steel girder bridge with reinforced concrete deck which was built in 1976 to ease traffic flow across the roundabout below.  It derives its name from the Army & Navy department store which used to be located there.Following an inspection report which raised concerns requiring further investigation, the flyover was closed on 11 September 2018.  With this important public structure closed for urgent checks, Robert West, working under the instructions of Topbond Plc, responded rapidly to undertake a detailed condition inspection. VALUE-ADDED SOLUTIONThe inspections were undertaken during both night and day shifts under traffic management conditions utilising specialist equipment including a Mobile Elevated Working Platform (MEWP).Performance Condition Indicator Scoring (previously BCI scoring) was undertaken. This involved assigning a defect severity and extent score…

THE BRIEF Robert West Consulting was commissioned by Springhill Farms having previously worked successfully on their site, providing a reservoir for both irrigation and drainage purposes. On this occasion, the brief was to design and secure technical approvals for a new junction (three arm roundabout) on the A44 to provide access to a new development that comprises a five-hectare glasshouse and anaerobic digester facility. In addition, Robert West Consulting provided feasibility, transport planning, procurement advice and construction administration for the on-site works.VALUE-ADDED SOLUTION Practical constraints involved keeping the flow of the traffic on the A road moving by undertaking the construction off-line and in several phases; highway drainage issues resolved with the unusual solution of a private attenuation pond; and the disparity in levels between the A44 and the immediate site…

Negative Short Circuit Devices

Negative Short Circuit Devices

Rail
THE BRIEF To reduce the inherent risks associated with taking electrical isolations for rail possessions, Negative Short Circuit Devices (NSCD’s) are being introduced to the rail infrastructure at substations in the Southern rail network.  NSCD’s provide a point of isolation for Direct Current Track (DC lines) when taking an isolation.  The NSCD’s are typically housed in a module or externally on concrete bases with various route works required.Robert West were briefed to provide design delivery, Building Information Modelling (BIM) and programme management for the route works, foundations and Flood Risk Assessments for the NSCD’s across eight sites in the South East of England over a period of approximately five months. VALUE-ADDED SOLUTION Robert West undertook the design whilst co-ordinating the requirements of both the electrical and civil disciplines.  In addition, topographical…
