SITE SECONDMENT EXPERIENCE
A member of the Robert West design team has welcomed the opportunity to develop his overall understanding of the entirety of the design and construction process by undertaking a secondment to site.
David is seconded to a rail construction site where stations are receiving significant improvements to prepare for Crossrail. The secondment will last for approximately one year and David is responsible for providing on-site design construction support. He provides this by:
- interpreting design drawings where needed
- advising on any design changes required
- liaising on a day-to-day basis with the Construction Engineer Manager, Design Manager, Project Managers, site engineers and sub agents
- assisting with the value-engineering of the build
- liaising with the Robert West team in the office for any new design briefs required
David is enjoying gaining an appreciation of construction and seeing the design drawings going up in real life. In particular, he likes the buzz of seeing the number of cranes on site, required materials appearing overnight and the detective part of the role around retaining the historical aspects of the buildings by reviewing intrusive surveys, looking at historical drawings and photos.
One of the challenges encountered has been the re-prioritising of construction tasks as daily problems occur such as finding undocumented buried obstructions, whilst maintaining progress towards the project completion date.
David reported back that he misses the team in the office but keeps in touch with, and is supported by the Robert West staff, via regular contact at design team meetings, email, Skype, visits back to the office and, of course, joining us for any social occasions where possible. He feels he is gaining experience which will feed into the designs he will create in the future and that this is also helping him to gather evidence towards becoming a Chartered Engineer via the Institute of Civil Engineers training scheme which Robert West operate.
We look forward to welcoming him back to the office at the end of his secondment!
