Testing of floating culvert for Thames Tideway Tunnel project at Blackfriars

Recently members of the Robert West team travelled to Santander, Spain to see the progress of the small scale testing to simulate the float-out operation of a 1 in 25 model of the concrete culvert weighing around 250 kg.

The experiments will help to confirm the behaviour of the floating structure under the effects of the ebbing and flooding currents as well as simulate the expected tensions on the towing lines during the manoeuvre.

The simulations are being undertaken at the Cantabria Hydraulics Institute, a world leading research institute and a facility with state of the art equipment for simulating and measuring every aspect from culvert motions to fender compressions.
