Tolworth Station

Tolworth Station

Rail
CASE STUDY Robert West delivered civil engineering design services for the refurbishment of Tolworth Station, including platform resurfacing and drainage upgrades. The project required a flexible and responsive approach due to tight possession-based delivery deadlines. To meet the programme, Robert West quickly adapted resources to align with contractor requirements and possession constraints, ensuring timely completion without compromising quality.A key innovation was the reduction in the scope of the construction works to stabilise the platform. By adopting a reduced design-life philosophy, we aligned survey requirements accordingly—minimising on-site intrusive works while maintaining compliance with relevant standards. This strategic approach optimised resources, reduced site disruption, and accelerated approvals. Our responsiveness and collaborative delivery ensured the design was ready ahead of critical programme milestones, contributing to the project’s overall success. Share BACK TO PROJECTS

Old Oak Common Abutment Stability

Old Oak Common Abutment Stability

Rail
CASE STUDY Existing scenario: Raking pile remedial system at toe of abutment wall stabilising the existing abutment against geotechnical failure. System required demolition to facilitate installation of permanent works (new concrete abutment). The design of the proposed ground anchors was carried out in accordance with BS EN 8081:2015 to resist the horizontal load that the raking pile system is designed to withstand (from record information). The stability analysis of the abutment with the ground anchors wall was undertaken considering the surcharge from railway traffic on the bridge and behind the bridge. In accordance with NR/GN/CIV/025 section 11.2 (assessment) table 11.1, a rail surcharge load model (RA8) of 38kN/m2 was used in the analysis. The analysis took into account dynamic effects, eg. taction and braking forces. The wall was analysed using the 3D Finite…

Old Oak Common Central Line Bridge

Old Oak Common Central Line Bridge

Rail
CASE STUDY Robert West designed temporary works to repurpose a 17m-span plate girder U-deck bridge as a haul road for plant, including a 75te piling rig. The solution involved structural assessment, strengthening bearing stiffeners, and installing ekki mats for load distribution.A monitoring regime was implemented, measuring deflections under incremental loads. Actual data aligned with theoretical values (+10 %), validating the analysis and ensuring safe passage of additional traffic loads. This approach enhanced accuracy, reduced risk, and optimised buildability, demonstrating our commitment to safe, efficient temporary works solutions. Share BACK TO PROJECTS

Northbrook Outrigger Foundations

Northbrook Outrigger Foundations

Rail
CASE STUDY Robert West Consulting provided temporary works design for crane outrigger foundations to support the installation of a new DC module at Northbrook Substation. To ensure safe and efficient lifting operations, RWC liaised closely with the crane contractor to fully understand loadings, ground conditions, and operational constraints. Two foundation options were proposed to the client, offering flexibility to suit site conditions and programme requirements. Both solutions ensured stability, safety, and compliance with temporary works standards, enabling successful installation with minimal disruption to ongoing substation operations. Jubilee School

Jubilee School

Uncategorized
THE BRIEFJubilee School in Maidstone, Kent is a one form entry primary school seeking to expand to two forms.  Planning permission had been declined on a number of grounds.  Robert West, having previously provided a Transport Assessment, were subsequently requested as Expert Witness during the Planning Inspectorate hearing. There were a number of constraints affecting the proposed school expansion – construction access/turning/parking, avoiding impact on a green field site and local residents, avoiding disruption to a recently constructed play area and safe access for pupils, staff and visitors during the construction period.VALUE-ADDED SOLUTIONOur team enjoyed working collaboratively with other stakeholders to unlock this tricky puzzle in an environment of mutual trust and to look beyond the obvious to identify creative solutions.Detailed analysis of highway and parking impacts, including parking surveys and…

Charing Cross Station Concourse

Charing Cross Station Concourse

Rail
THE BRIEF Robert West was the multi-disciplinary designer during the outline design phase, responsible for delivering building services, structural engineering, telecommunication, fire and architectural disciplines. The scope of the project was to re-model the main concourse area in order to improve passenger flows and additionally provide temporary strengthening to existing platforms.VALUE-ADDED SOLUTION Robert West’s role encompassed:Project management to ensure that the tight deadlines were metDealing with limited information about the existing structures, applying sound engineering judgement and knowledge to recommend the right advice at all timesOvercoming various challenges thanks to a collaborative approach with the contractor and the wider project team.FINAL OUTCOMES Robert West's coordinated detailed design and site support allowed the Contractor to deliver the construction works to tight timescales and possession constraints. The outcome resulted in reduced congestion on…

Digital escalator panel refresh

Digital escalator panel refresh

Rail
THE BRIEF As part of the London Underground Digital Escalator Panel (DEP) Refresh project, Exterion Media are upgrading the current digital advertising panels with new, more energy efficient digital monitors and installing brand new continuous digital ‘Ribbon’ screens. These new screens run along the existing escalator incline at 25 different stations across the London Underground (LU) infrastructure. Our brief was to provide full design and assurance to LU process and requirements services for the Civils, Structural and Premises elements of the project from feasibility through detailed design and construction support. VALUE-ADDED SOLUTION During the early stages of each workstream (DEP or Ribbon), we worked closely with Telent to come up with the most effective solution for the structural support designs for the screens. Robert West advised to carry out assessments of…

Silvertown Tunnel new north bank river wall

Silvertown Tunnel new north bank river wall

Marine
THE BRIEF The Riverlinx Joint Venture was required to construct a new river wall along the north bank of the River Thames comprising a tied sheet pile intertidal wall; a precast concrete flood wall; and an intertidal terrace. The works provide 340m (out of approximately 1km of new flood defences) being constructed as part of the wider Silvertown Development Plan. The brief included requirements to prepare a design capable of construction from land-based plant within a range of site-specific constraints. A section of the wall passes over the new tunnel bores limiting penetration of piles; the wall needs to retain stability during the tunnel boring; flood defence levels need to be maintained at all stages of the construction; a design life of 120 years is required, and compliance is needed…

Skylon Park Hereford Enterprise Zone

Skylon Park Hereford Enterprise Zone

Infrastructure
THE BRIEF Skylon Park is a 72-acre industrial and commercial development to promote economic growth in the area. It lies on former wartime munitions ‘brownfield land’ and named after the futuristic-looking slender, vertical structure that was fabricated in Hereford in 1951 for the Festival of Britain. The appropriate infrastructure to attract developers and owner-occupiers to build on individual prepared plots is being provided by the Hereford Enterprise Zone (HEZ).VALUE-ADDED SOLUTION As technical advisor, Robert West has been responsible for the coordination and management of services to enable infrastructure construction and land sales, taking schemes from initial project inception through to building completion & occupation. This has included management and control of site datum information, value-engineering led solutions, advising HEZ on overall development strategy, plot configurations, feasibility advice & constraints and…

The Green School for boys

The Green School for boys

Infrastructure
THE BRIEF Robert West's brief was to provide transport planning and highway advice for the re-development of a site located in Isleworth in the London Borough of Hounslow for the new Green School for Boys - a five form entry secondary school and sixth form for up to 900 pupils. To allow the new school to open in September 2017 temporary school accommodation for up to 300 pupils for two years has been provided while a permanent building would be constructed.Robert West have been responsible for producing Transport Assessment, School Travel Plan, Delivery and Servicing Plan, PERS and CERS audits for the temporary site and for discharging planning conditions. Robert West subsequently produced off-site highway works design for a proposed signalised crossing and detailed modelling work to support the proposal. Finally,…
