Infrastructure
THE BRIEF Robert West was engaged by Crest Nicholson to provide preliminary highway and drainage design for the housing development of 100 new dwellings in Godalming, Surrey.VALUE-ADDED SOLUTION Robert West reviewed the existing structures on site and provided structural advice about how the demolition should be undertaken in order to avoid compromising the existing retaining structures, the highway network and the ambulance building which is remaining.A Flood Risk Assessment (FRA) and drainage strategy was produced.  This included the preliminary design of the new highway network including a new road for adoption under Section 38 and the re-development of access to the site under Section 278.Liaison with Thames Water, the Environment Agency and Lead Local Flood Authority was undertaken to agree the discharge rate from the development in order to design…

Negative Short Circuit Devices

Negative Short Circuit Devices

Rail
THE BRIEF To reduce the inherent risks associated with taking electrical isolations for rail possessions, Negative Short Circuit Devices (NSCD’s) are being introduced to the rail infrastructure at substations in the Southern rail network.  NSCD’s provide a point of isolation for Direct Current Track (DC lines) when taking an isolation.  The NSCD’s are typically housed in a module or externally on concrete bases with various route works required.Robert West were briefed to provide design delivery, Building Information Modelling (BIM) and programme management for the route works, foundations and Flood Risk Assessments for the NSCD’s across eight sites in the South East of England over a period of approximately five months. VALUE-ADDED SOLUTION Robert West undertook the design whilst co-ordinating the requirements of both the electrical and civil disciplines.  In addition, topographical…

Soham Station

Soham Station

Rail
THE BRIEF The original railway station in Soham closed in 1965. To reconnect the town of Soham to the rail network and to provide essential infrastructure for the growth in new local housing, proposals for a new station were made. Robert West were the Lead and Multi-Discipline Designers for GRIP Stage 4.VALUE-ADDED SOLUTION The new station will be an unmanned station, with platforms constructed using modular polystyrene and based on a sand bed.  Phase 1 is a single platform which will include two waiting shelters, lighting, information screens and a public address system.  In addition, a public footbridge will be built to maintain access for residents to the countryside and to improve user safety, through the removal of the current level crossing.  A drop off point and car park will…

Culvert Float Out at Blackfriars

Culvert Float Out at Blackfriars

Marine
THE BRIEF Love solving problems?  This was a fascinating challenge for the team at Robert West.A culvert was required as part of the Thames Tideway Tunnel programme at Blackfriars to divert the flow originally discharged into the river to the new sewer.  The constraints at the site - an existing Combined Sewer Outfall (CSO) underneath Blackfriars Bridge and the presence of the Waterloo and City Line Tube tunnel - prevented the construction of the temporary cofferdam in situ.VALUE-ADDED SOLUTION The solution designed by Robert West consisted of pre-casting the culvert within the Blackfriars Cofferdam and then floating it out to its final position where it was set down. The float out journey  was approximately 100 metres long. The culvert itself is 100 metres long, seven metres wide, seven metres high…
