Albert Embankment Temporary Cofferdam 2

Albert Embankment Temporary Cofferdam 2

Marine
THE BRIEF Robert West was appointed by the joint venture of Ferrovial Agroman Laing O’Rourke joint venture (FLO) responsible for delivering the central section of the Tideway project to design Temporary Cofferdam 2 at Albert Embankment on the River Thames.  There are three linked cofferdams at Albert Embankment being built in stages.  The Temporary Cofferdam 2, located downstream of Vauxhall Bridge, creates a dry area to enable the construction of the Interception Chamber (part of the permanent works) which will intercept the flows from the Brixton and Clapham Culvert. The Clapham Culvert is upstream of Vauxhall Bridge, a third Cofferdam is currently under design to intercept the flow and divert it to the Interception Chamber at Cofferdam 2.There will be a tunnel connecting Cofferdams 2 and 1, where the main shaft…

Blackfriars bridge foreshore temporary western cofferdam

Marine
THE BRIEF Flo JV appointed BAM Nuttall Ltd (BAMN) to design and construct a Temporary Cofferdam at the Thames Tideway Blackfriars bridge Foreshore Site. BAMN appointed Robert West Consulting with Byland Engineering Ltd. operating as geotechnical advisor, to complete the outline and detailed design of the Temporary Cofferdam Structure. The Temporary Cofferdam is required to enable the construction of the permanent works proposed at the Thames Tideway Blackfriars Foreshore Site. The permanent works consist of the construction of a tunnel shaft, outfall chamber, culverts and new river wall, in order to intercept flow from the existing Fleet Main Sewer CSO located in the Victoria Embankment river wall. The brief for the required functionality of the Temporary Cofferdam, included:• Retain reclaimed land south of the existing river wall to enable construction of…

Kirtling street temporary works

Marine
THE BRIEF Flo JV appointed BAM Nuttall Ltd (BNL) to design and construct the marine side temporary works required for the construction of the Thames Tideway Tunnel at the Kirtling Street site. BNL appointed Robert West Consulting to design the temporary works. The temporary works consist of delivery and removal facilities to allow for the delivery of the tunnel boring machine and tunnel segments and removal of spoil from the tunnel bore and shaft. All spoil will be exported by barge along the river to reduce the number of heavy goods vehicles on the roads. The temporary works solution developed by the BNL/RWC team comprised drilled and socketed tubular piles, prefabricated steel superstructure, and pre-cast concrete deck. Additionally, support structures for a fixed conveyor with pivot arm and berthing structures for barges…

Woolwich Ferry riverbed survey

Woolwich Ferry riverbed survey

Marine
THE BRIEF As part of the Woolwich Ferry replacement project, a detailed survey of the river bed was undertaken by our client – Briggs Marine VALUE-ADDED SOLUTION To enable this Robert West specified the survey method – that of using the Port of London Hydrographic Department state of the art geo-physical equipment combining multi-beam sonar and a 3D chirp.  This enabled the plotting of detailed bathymetry which located the top of the chalk strata, submerged structures and debris including potential unexploded ordnance (pUXO) resting at, or just below the river bed by identifying objects which were acoustically different from the surrounding medium. FINAL OUTCOMES Briggs Marine’s Diving Division then investigated each anomaly identified which determined that these were not UXO’s.  The divers then proceeded to remove the various obstructions and…

Blackfriars bridge temporary cofferdam analysis

Blackfriars bridge temporary cofferdam analysis

Marine
THE BRIEF Robert West was appointed to provide the detail design of a temporary cofferdam at Blackfriars to enable dewatering of a section of the foreshore for construction of a shaft to the new Thames Tideway tunnel.VALUE-ADDED SOLUTION A challenging aspect of the design was to model and understand the deflections and stresses in the structure due to the varying stiffness of a combi wall section, the twin wall cofferdam and the existing river wall. The analysis was undertaken using an FEM analysis; horizontal membrane forces and bending moments were also modelled.  In addition, we investigated the possibility of global or local buckling through a eigenvalue stability analysis.FINAL OUTCOMES The analysis allowed us to optimise the design solution and improve buildability. Chelsea embankment foreshore temporary cofferdam

Marine
THE BRIEF The joint venture of Ferrovial Agroman and Laing O’Rourke that is building the central section of the Thames Tideway Tunnel appointed Robert West to design the Temporary Works at Chelsea Embankment foreshore (CHEEF).The main structure consists of a temporary cofferdam, creating a new piece of land in the River Thames to enable the construction of a shaft for the Thames Tideway Tunnel. The cofferdam took the form of twin, sand infilled, steel walls tied together to form the main body, which will allow the Thames Tideway Tunnel project to progress work beneath ground. When completed, the temporary cofferdam will be removed. Robert West provided construction support throughout.VALUE-ADDED SOLUTION There were a number of engineering challenges which our team had to take into consideration in providing our solutions:• the…

UIG harbour redevelopment

UIG harbour redevelopment

Marine
THE BRIEF Robert West Consulting were commissioned by Mclaughlin and Harvey to prepare tender stage designs forming an alternative tender proposal for parts of the Highland Council’s Uig Harbour Redevelopment project. The Works comprised a 100m long new pier formed by circular sheet pile cofferdams with a capping slab; a new turning dolphin; new linkspan supports; and refurbishment of a variety of other structures. The Employer had completed detail designs for the whole of the Works but sought alternatives designs offering enhanced value.VALUE-ADDED SOLUTION An evaluation of the Employer design identified significant risks of maintaining the stability of the circular cofferdams during medium weather events and the possibility of losing whole uncompleted sections during storm events. The programme and weather window was challenging. In addition, the structures were sensitive to…
